Linus is one out-of-this-world chimp. This should come as no surprise given the long primate history with NASA and space flight. During the space race, lots of primates were used for the earliest test flights into space. But it was Ham the Astrochimp that became the first hominid into space, being launched on January 31, 1961. Ham’s performance was extremely important as it demonstrated that tasks could be performed in the vacuum of space. Ham’s lever-pushing ability in space was only a fraction of a second slower than on Earth.
